Airplanes and energy: Lufthansa successfully tested a fuel made from biomass that is less polluting.

According to this article published in "Tendencias 21", the new fuel saves about one ton of CO2 per tonne of fuel, and lack of sulfur and other contaminants.

Lufthansa has been successfully tested for half a year a jet fuel made from biomass, which saves CO2 emissions and sulfur, and is fully compatible with conventional engines.
In total, this fuel is made with 1187 flights between Hamburg and Frankfurt, which was saved 1471 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

BurnFAIR project, the name given to these trials, has gone smoothly. As expected, the biofuel has proved effective on flights, according to the authors of the tests.

Lufthansa has made the first test, six months, with a biosynthetic fuel. These tests were carried out under the project burnFAIR developed to test the efficiency of such fuel in air navigation. The company recently announced the results of these trials have been positive.
In total, they took the fuel out 1187 flights between Hamburg and Frankfurt, which was saved 1471 tonnes of CO2 emissions. The project burnFAIR "has gone smoothly and we are very satisfied. As expected, the biofuel has proved its effectiveness in flight," confirmed Joaquim Buse, vice president of Biofuel for Aviation Lufthansa.

During the tests, were consumed 1556 tons of bio-kerosene. Last Thursday saw the first transatlantic flight to the U.S. with this fuel. A Boeing 747-400, carrying 40 tonnes of biosynthetic fuel on board, flew from Frankfurt to Washington.

Only with this flight was saved 38 tonnes of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere, equivalent to six flights between Frankfurt and Berlin.

In line with the objective of the IATA (Air Transport Association) globally, airlines must reduce net emissions of carbon dioxide by 50% by 2050 (over 2005). "If we protect our climate and our future as a sustainable way, we need innovative ideas and technologies and an alternative to fossil fuels compatible with the environment, particularly with the growing global demand for mobility," said Christoph Franz, President of the Council German company executive.

Consume less than 1%

The biosynthetic kerosene, the statement is as reliable as conventional, but their environmental effects are more levevs. Thanks to its greater density, it has been possible to reduce consumption by more than 1%. In addition, the biosynthetic fuel is free of sulfur and aromatics.

The principle that saves emissions that fuel is simple and is based on the carbon cycle. Plants (from which we get the biomass and biofuel it) absorb CO2 from the atmosphere through photosynthesis. When aircraft engines burn biofuel, carbon dioxide is returned to the atmosphere, but in an amount 50% lower than fossil fuels.

"The next step will focus on sustainability, availability and certification of raw materials. But first we need to access this market. However, Lufthansa will only continue with the tests if we can ensure the sustainable supply of raw materials and certified to maintain our operations" , Joaquim said Buse.

From 15 July to 27 December last year an Airbus A321 followed the route Hamburg-Frankfurt eight times daily. One of its two engines use a mixture of 50% of normal fuel and biosynthetic. The objective of this long-term test was to observe the effect of biofuels on the environment, and maintenance and engine life.

Production of biofuel

The biofuel used by Lufthansa liquefying biomass is produced, and is known as BtL (Biomass to Liquid). The producer is the Finnish oil company Neste Oil. The material does not in any way affect the passengers, because it is fully compatible with traditional kerosene, and engines need no modification.

The fact of using biofuel in only one of the two engines of the aircraft is intended to make a comparison between the two. However, you can use a mixture with more than 50% of biofuel, since the aromatic components of this are lacking essential to the operation of the engine.

The choice of the Hamburg-Frankfurt route because it is Hamburg where Lufthansa has its headquarters, and can keep separate the normal fuel biofuel in special tanks. Lufthansa has also recently reached an agreement with Australian company Algae.Tec, to jointly evaluate the potential of algae oil as a future source of sustainable fuel for aircraft.

Importan advances in Spanish studies to start biofuel production from microalgae.

n Spain, the biofuels production is rapidly advancing. This paper gives an account of the union of research centers with universities to harness the potential of algae.

Research Center and the Department Cepsa Cepsa working since 2010 in a research project to evaluate the feasibility of using microalgae in obtaining useful fatty acids for the production of biodiesel.
The initiative, as reported by the company in a note, which is under development at the International Center for Studies and Ecology and Environmental Conventions (Ciecem) located in the town of Almonte and managed by the University of Huelva, is directed by Professor Carlos Vilchez and also has the support of the University of Huelva, Cadiz University Bio-Oils.
In addition, the project has received financial support from the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) of the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness.
Microalgae are photosynthetic organisms, microscopic in size, able to capture a fraction of the energy from the sun that used to generate nutrients and ensure their own development. For this, the solar energy captured performs a complex 'travel' in communion with different chemical molecules of cellular metabolism of the microalgae, some of which have value as fuel or can be converted into such through simple chemical transformations.
The research work, driven by the Spanish Company Petroleum aims to assess the feasibility of this use.
Thus, in a first stage, the search proceeded, isolation and laboratory culture of microalgae with ability to adapt to environmental conditions in the geographic area potentially develop their culture, then selecting those that have a better profile quantitative and qualitative, lipids of interest, in order to continue experimenting with such species to a larger scale than the laboratory.
One of the novelties of the investigation at this stage has been taken as a new species of microalgae samples of natural environments La Rabida refinery "capable of fixing CO2 by solar radiation." To date, it has been determined that the microalgae "more promising" than those obtained by the team in different natural environments accumulates about 35 percent of potentially useful lipids for biodiesel production.
EXPERIMENTS IN CROPPING SYSTEMS
The current phase of work through the laboratory work to stimulate the accumulation of lipids in microalgae and conducting experiments in farming systems inside and outside the order of 300 volumes of 700 liters, with the objective of power then scale the results obtained in the laboratory.
"The success of these initiatives come necessarily from the integration of professional knowledge and several different branches of science and engineering, primarily from microbiology, physiology and biochemistry of algae, bio mass production of microorganisms and chemistry of the extraction, separation and processing of oils into biodiesel, it matters in which the contribution and experience of Cepsa and BioOils are essential, "said the lead researcher, Carlos Vilchez.
Similarly, the Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of Huelva, Jesus de la Rosa, in his speech highlighted the value of such initiatives jointly developed "the company and the university." "It is imperative that there is this combination so successful and so profitable for both parties," he added.
This work, driven by Cepsa, is "an example of the way" to be followed by university research, and also the support that the business "should be offered to science as a source of improvement and progress to ensure their future."
Commitment to research
For his part, Director of Technology Cepsa, Jaime Berbés, stressed the importance of innovation in Cepsa Group's activities and its effect on immediate profitability and ensure its competitive position in a changing and increasingly demanding.
"The role of Cepsa Research Center is essential not only for its ability to catalyze such initiatives internally, but because it is as a valid interlocutor with other entities, in this case with the University of Huelva and Cadiz, without whose participation can not imagine a project like that was presented today and many others that are developed in the framework of the Chairs Cepsa, which also include the University of Seville, "he stated.
As leader of this research, Cepsa is integrated into the international map of scientific and technological initiatives to search for new fuels from photosynthesis.

I Spania, raskt fremme biodrivstoff.

Eksperimenter i BESKJÆRING SYSTEMS

The bioethanol sales in Spain rose by 56.6% in 2010 and biodiesel increased by 32.8%

In this article published by EuropaPress realizes as the biofuels segment focused on the bioetano grew more than any other but also reflects the general growth of the sector.

Annual sales of bioethanol increased by 56.6% in 2010, to 468,470 meters cubic, while biodiesel increased by 32.88% to 1.554 million cubic meters, according to the annual report on the use of biofuels Spain of the National Commission of Energy (CNE).

In terms of volume represent 5.56% of total diesel fuel and 6.22% of automotive gasoline sold in 2010.

The final number of certificates listed totaled 1.45 million, 1.212 million of biofuels in diesel (5% vs. 3.9%) and almost reach the individual target of biofuels in gasoline (3.88% vs 3.9% ). As the overall goal, scored after the certificates have been adjusted transfers exempt from payment threshold of 4.78%.

Regarding biodiesel, most of the consumed was produced mainly from soybeans and palm. Spain has fallen to 8.29% its stake in the raw materials used to manufacture biodiesel and also decreased the percentage produced in the country, although still above 50%. The second largest producer of biodiesel consumed in Spain was Argentina, which doubled its weight over the previous year.

Meanwhile, the ethanol consumed was produced mainly from sugar cane (36%), corn (30.96%) and wheat (19.54%). Meanwhile, Brazil has moved into first place in terms of countries growing feedstock, followed by Spain. Should also be noted that decreased the percentage of bioethanol produced in Spain (48.79%).
Based on raw materials stated in the certification system, biofuels sold in Spain would have allowed an overall reduction in emissions of greenhouse gases estimated at 43% (37% for the use of biodiesel and 68% for bioethanol) .
On the other hand, the CNE has updated its forecast of demand, concluding that the estimated sales of biofuel could be achieved, so adjusted, the individual target in gasoline, but would remain below the target individual diesel and also the overall target in 2012 and 2013.
