What are first generation biofuels?


There are 3 types of classifications of biofuels. First, second and third generation of the type of raw material used to produce the fuel.

The first generation biofuels were the first to be manufactured and are of major concern because they are used as raw material food crops. Among those that stand out corn, sugarcane, soybeans, among others to produce bioethanol and biodiesel.

U.S. and Brazil are pioneers in this type of biofuel and are the largest producers and who have developed this kind of alternative fuel much earlier than in other countries.

This type of biofuel is feasible in the short term and is limited to the use of agricultural land for crops then used to manufacture biofuels without generating problems of food insecurity and food prices for the poorest sectors of the population. Environmental problems as well as soil depletion, deforestation, among others.

It is expected that in a few years only a small proportion of the total production of first generation biofuels is that the second and third are the most widely used because of their greater sustainability over time and they do not use food crops.

An important variable to consider that climate change affects crop yield is therefore not advisable to force through an intensive crop to produce fuel.

The UN encourages the use and production of biofuels in several reports but is concerned to avoid global food crises resulting from biofuels therefore recommended that countries and companies developing fuel types in the medium and long term.

They are making significant technological advances in the second and third generation as they are the most likely to replace fossil fuels that dominate the market today.

It is important to realize the benefits of bioenergy without creating new social and environmental problems.
