Petrobras: Production of biodiesel with fish waste

Petrobras Biofuels, a subsidiary of Petrobras, is already producing biodiesel from waste and fat fish in a fish pole of Ceará.

The initiative has the support of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture (MPA), and is expected to rapidly expand to other states.

"It's great news for farmers, who in addition to selling fish meat, increasingly appreciated by the population as being nutritious and healthy, can market from fish skin for crafts up his guts and waste processing" said Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Helder Barbalho.

Buying leftovers and guts for biofuel production is the result of a contract between the subsidiary of Petrobras and Producers Cooperative Curupati Jaguaribara in central-south of Ceará, signed late last year.

In a first stage to 4.55 tons of product oil extraction known as OGR (residual oils and fats) are processed. The extraction is carried out in Quixadá plant, about 170 kilometers from Fortaleza, capital of Ceará.

Biodiesel production from this raw material promises to expand in the state. Until late 2015, the project will reach half of the 600 family farmers working in dams Castanhão and Orós, the largest of Ceará, both in Jaguaribe river basin.

In Castanhão who will benefit are the piscicutores of municipalities Jaguaribara, Jaguaretama and Alto Santo, and Orós, the municipalities of Orós and Quixelô

According to Petrobras, the use of guts for oil production ensures biodiesel quality raw materials, as envisaged in the National Program for Production and Use of Biodiesel, which guarantees the Social Fuel Seal of the Ministry of Agrarian Development.

For farmers, this activity allows the generation of market value for a product and thus provides extra income.

At the same time, this material takes advantage of biodiesel which otherwise could have a negative impact on the environment.

Many government agencies, academic institutions and banking institutions support the initiative of Petrobras Biofuel.

Besides the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture, are partners in the project to produce biodiesel from guts the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture of the State of Ceará, the Center for Industrial Technology Ceará Foundation (Nutec), the Technology Center Federal University of Ceará, Northeast Bank, Bank of Brazil, the National Department of Works against Drought (DNOCS) and prefectures Jaguaribara and Orós.
